Practical ideas to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

CFL Light for Incandescent Lovers

Available 12/28/2008 at Eagle Hardware, GE has designed a new CFL bulb that is shaped like a regular incandescent bulb.  In addition to being more aesthetically pleasing, this bulb looks safer than a regular CFL bulb.

An Excellent Resource: Green Your

A colleague recently showed me an excellent website called “Green Your”. It is a very similar website to Ike’s Guide, with the big differences being that Green Your has a broader focus on being green, a wider selection of ideas, and a much more elegant design.

Green Your is full of useful resources and ideas. If you are looking for green shopping ideas, Green Your is a better starting point than Google. I would highly recommend bookmarking Green Your and consulting it every time you are ready to make a large (or small) purchase. The way we spend our money is how we have the most influence on the world around us, so it is nice to have such a great site to help us shape our future.

Ike’s Guide has a narrower focus than Green Your. Instead of an abstract concept like being green, this is a guide with a very clear goal of reducing our usage of fossil fuels. Hopefully having the well defined goal will help focus on solving specific problems and provide direction on some difficult choices.

Plug-ins, Ecodriving, and Electric Motorcycles

Found a more affordable conversion kit for the Prius hybrid. If you have a Prius and aren’t too squeamish about the warranty, a plug-in is a surprisingly simple way to use pure electricity for short commutes. (Without compromising the range you can have from the gas engine.)

For the more adventurous, a nice post about converting a motorcycle to electric on gas2.org. "The highest form of recycling."

If you really want to get the most out of that electric drive, try out ecodriving (or “hypermilling”). But be safe!

A Fresh New Start and Some Computing Ideas

I’ve decided to change how I use this blog. Before I was using it to track changes to Ike’s Guide like a change log, but now I’m going to start using the blog as a more traditional blog with more editorial posts and stories about trying out ideas from Ike’s Guide. I hope to really give a feeling for what I mean with the tag-line “Practical ideas to reduce the use of fossil fuels” without cluttering the website itself.

One of the latest tools I’ve found is a service called CO2Stats. You can see the free version in the left on Ike’s Guide (the big green block that says “Green Website”). I’m also using the pro version at work, fmyi.com. It is a novel idea that uses the location of the client and server to figure out the approximate energy breakdown of someone viewing a website. Not only do they figure out how much fossil fuel is being used, they take it a step further and purchase renewable energy credits to offset the impact.

Another resource that I found when I was researching co2stats is a hosting company called AISO (Affordable Internet Service Online). They are 100% solar powered, which is much more satisfying then buying renewable energy offsets. When I get a chance I hope to move Ike’s Guide to AISO.
